Chevrolet Vehicle Service Warning Indicators

Here at Kenny Kent Chevrolet we're often asked about the meaning of vehicle service indicators. These are the warning lights that pop up on your dashboard from time to time, alerting you to a potential problem or needed maintenance. We've put together ten vehicle service warning indicators that you should be familiar with.

Airbag Fault

Airbag Fault

Your supplemental restraint system, such as your airbag and seatbelts, may be malfunctioning if this warning light remains on after your car has been started. We recommend that you bring your car to our service center for professional assistance.

Low Fuel Level Warning Light

Low Fuel Level Warning Light

The low fuel warning light indicates that the fuel in your car is low, and you should stop for fuel at the next available opportunity. Driving with a low fuel level can cause irreparable damage to your fuel pump.

Oil Pressure Warning Light

Oil Pressure Warning Light

An oil pressure warning indicator can be a major cause for concern. The problem may be as simple as a low oil level in your car, or it can be a serious issue involving your engine. Try adding oil, but bring your car in for inspection if this doesn't fix the problem.

Service Vehicle Soon

Service Vehicle Soon

You will see this indicator when your vehicle needs to be taken in for scheduled maintenance, usually every 5,000 miles. After an oil change and a tire rotation, the sensor will be reset to alert you again in the future.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System)

Cars that are equipped with TPMS will let you know when the pressure in one or more of your car's tires is low. You can remove the light by adding air to tires that are low on tire pressure. If the light stays on, you will probably need the help of a service professional.

Slip Indicator

Slip Indicator

Cars that are equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) or Traction Control (TRAC) can display a warning when your car loses traction. The light flashes to let you know that VSC or TRAC has been engaged. If the light remains on, there could be a problem with your VSC system.

Charging System Warning Light

Charging System Warning Light

When this light comes on, the battery in your car is not being given a full charge. A broken belt or your alternator may be to blame, but you should stop the car until you can have it seen by a service department.

Brake System

Brake System

There could be a problem with your braking system. You probably are not in danger of losing your brakes immediately, but you should have the brakes checked and serviced at your dealer's maintenance center.

Open Door Warning Light

Open Door Warning Light

A door on your vehicle has been left open. The indicator can also appear if the hatch on your car is open. Close and secure the doors to your vehicle to make this warning go away.

Coolant Level Warning

Coolant Level Warning

Driving your car with a low level of coolant can cause damage to the car's engine. This light means that you need to check the coolant level in your radiator. Stop the car as soon as possible, allow it to cool, and add coolant to your radiator.
